DJ Headphones

Headphones are the most important tool of a DJ. Every DJ has a favorite pair of headphones and those headphones are essential to performing at the highest level.

What makes one set of headphones different from another? First is size. While it's possible to use earbuds or even monitor speakers to cue and mix, most DJs prefer a large cup to help isolate the sound in their headphones. Most often a DJ is working in a club atmosphere where the SPL can be extremely high. Full over-the-ear stereo headphones provide the most isolation to allow a DJ to hear cues over the house PA system.

The second thing that differentiates one set of headphones from another is frequency response. Many of the lighter and cheaper headphones have light and cheap drivers. These drivers will not accurately reproduce the full range of music that a DJ needs to hear. Light and cheap drivers are also frequently made of plastic which can warp in high temperatures and humidity. Headphones for a DJ need high quality drivers for the low frequency material that is common in dance, hip hop, electronica, and most other club music. Accurate mid and high frequencies are also important for cues and overall system equalization.

Many top DJs are trying new technologies in their rigs, and headphones are no exception. Bluetooth and other wireless technologies are getting better and more acceptable in professional-use applications. Noise cancellation and isolation are also features that some DJs are considering.

When auditioning headphones, start with some music you're familiar with as a reference. Knowing what you're listening to will help you evaluate the sound quality in different models of headphones.

Don't be afraid to try new sizes and technologies. You will definitely want to play with a new set of headphones before you use them in the booth, but you might find just a brand new pair of headphones will give some new life into your mixes. Those new headphones might just become your old favorites.
